hopium =/= copium

on the balance between tough love and compassion

peace

I don't have TikTok or Instagram on my phone, but I do have Youtube.

And sometimes (more often than I admit), I look at shorts.

Being into self-development, entrepreneurship, and just becoming a better me, I get suggestions based on that.

Most of the time, I discard them because some of that content is downright offensive, screaming at me for not being enough.

Some points might hit deeper, but self-improvement shouldn't all be about tough love. (I understand tough love as "calling someone out on their bs")

By glorifying people like Andrew Tate or "grinders" like him, we forget about something human in the growth process.

Compassion.

I'm not saying tough love isn't necessary for us to grow. It is.

However, the most significant growth happens somewhere in the overlap of those two.

That's where hope is born.

It stems from knowing the road we've been on and finding a possibility of change down the road.

No wonder more videos called "hopecore compilations" are appearing online.

After all that brute force, redpill fuelled self-improvement journey that probably caused more psychological damage than support; we're entering a more hopeful age.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -

And sore must be the storm -

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -

And on the strangest Sea -

Yet - never - in Extremity,

It asked a crumb - of me.

How can this approach to self-dev impact you?

Empathy Encourages Growth

A blend of tough love and compassion hinges on empathy, essential for self-development.

Tough love grounded in empathy nudges us out of our comfort zones and helps us improve.

Compassion, and empathetic response to suffering, aids us during challenging times, ensuring we don't push ourselves to breaking points but build resilience.

Upgraded Emotional Intelligence

Tough love forces us to confront and understand our emotions, while compassion encourages us to respond to these emotions kindly.

It's about taking rough, almost forceful advice and putting it through our judgeless frame of mind.

This interaction cultivates emotional intelligence, improving our ability to make personal decisions.

Self-Awareness and Acceptance

Tough love encourages self-awareness by compelling us to face our weaknesses and shortcomings at face value.

Compassion, in its empathetic nature, helps us acknowledge and accept these facets of ourselves without self-deprecation.

Hard Worked Fuelled by Compassion

Empathetic tough love nurtures a growth mindset by reinforcing that our abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication.

When paired with compassionate understanding, it encourages us to view setbacks and mistakes as opportunities for growth rather than failures, fostering a healthier and more constructive mindset.

Encourages Persistence and Perseverance

Empathy plays a crucial role in fostering both persistence and perseverance.

Empathetic tough love motivates us to persist in facing obstacles, instilling a sense of courage.

On the other hand, compassion provides the necessary emotional comfort and support, reminding us to be patient and kind to ourselves throughout our self-development journey.

What is your viewpoint on this matter?

  • Do you prefer going the old, conservative self-dev route of screaming at a 40-year-old man, telling you you are not good enough?

  • Or would you like to look into the future with a hopeful perspective, reflecting on your mistakes and trying to improve?

Whatever you do, take care.

Love you,

Piotr
